China Jan-Feb 约吗LNG imports surge as demand soars amid cold spells
Beijing (JLC), March 25, 2021--China’s LNG imports spiked in January and February amid surging heating demand when the country was hit by cold spells.China imported 14.04 million (mln) mt of LNG (or 19.38 bcm of gas, with 1,380 cbm for one mt) in the two months, up by 27.2% from a year earlier, data from the Chinese General Administration of Customs (GAC) showed. Imports in January and February were 8.49 mln mt and 5.55 mln mt respectively, a year-on-year increase of 27.5% and 26.7%.Another reason for the year-on-year surge was that LNG imports in the same period of last year were curbed by the outbreak of COVID-19 when downstream demand plunged.Based on China’s LNG import value of $3.25 billion and $2.43 billion in January and February, the average import cost in these two months was estimated at $404.3/mt, down 7.3% year on year. The import cost averaged $383.1/mt in January, a year on year decrease of 14.8% and $436.5/mt in February, a year on year rise of 5.1%.The import costs slipped in the first two months of 2021, as Chinese buyers reduced the purchase of LNG spots after prices climbed. Spot LNG prices rose repeatedly following the production cut of multiple LNG export facilities and busy traffic of the Panama Canal. Chinese buyers turned to long-term LNG contracts, whose prices lagged behind spot ones due to the pricing cycle. The value of some imports was based on international prices in the second half of 2020 when Brent futures averaged $44.3/bbl, down by 28.8% year on year, JLC research showed.In terms of origin, Australia was still China's largest LNG supplier. About 4.93 mln mt of China's imported LNG, or 35.1%, came from Australia in January and February, down by 1.6% year on year, the GAC data indicates. Qatar ranked second by exporting 2.31 mln mt of LNG to China, 16.5% of the total imports, up by 26.9% year on year. The US rose to the third place with 1.54 mln mt or 10.9% of China’s imports. China did not import any LNG from the US in the same period of last year, given the China-US trade war.China imported 6.75 mln mt of PNG (about 9.3 bcm after gasification) in January and February, growing 1.2% year on year. China’s PNG imports were 3.19 mln mt (about 4.4 bcm after gasification) in January and 3.57 mln mt (about 4.9 bcm after gasification) in February, a year-on-year decrease of 4.6% and 7%.The import costs of PNG in January and February were estimated at $245.1/mt and $239.6/mt according to the total value of $780 million and $850 million, down by 28.2% and 26.5% respectively.Turkmenistan remained the largest PNG supplier of China. China imported a total of 4.05 mln mt of PNG (about 5.6 bcm after gasification) in the first two months of 2021, up by 0.3% from a year ago. It is worth mentioning that China imported 1.15 mln mt of PNG (about 1.6 bcm after gasification) from Russia, a year-on-year surge of 136.7%. Gazprom expects to supply 10bcm of natural gas to China in 2021. Meanwhile, Kazakhstan only exported 490,000 mt of PNG (about 0.7 bcm after gasification) to China in January and February, dropping 56.1% year on year. Kazakhstan plans to export 10bcm of natural gas to China in 2021, according to the trade agreement signed by Kazakhstan Munay Gaz and PetroChina International Co., Ltd. Alataw Pass Branch.
